SEPTIC TANKS.
TAKAPUNA EXPERIENCE. In reply to a communication from the Putaruru Town Board, the sanitary inspector to the Takapuna Borough Council forwarded a lengthy report on septic tanks which was read at the last meeting of the board. Items in the report were:— There should be a fall away from the dwelling, public place or watercourse, and the site should be sunny and open. There must be no possibility of the discharge overflowing and creating a public nuisance or menace to health. The effluent must not drain or discharge near any public place or dwelling to the danger of any well or watercourse in the vicinity. The sub-soil must be open and porous. Many other details of a technical nature were also given. The Chairman : According to that report few of the tanks in the town should have been built. Mr. Barr Brown : That is so. Mr. Yandle said he could not see how some tanks could possibly be a success from the manner in which they were used. Mr. Tomalin said the previous inspector had been against septic tanks in Princes street as small sections tended towards making a slum. It seemed to him that some tanks were too small and might have to come out, according to the report. It was agreed that in future stricter supervision would be necessary and that no action be taken in regard to tanks already erected.
