OLD MAN FEARED DROWNED.
IN ORAKA RIVER. Uate on Saturday afternoon an elderly man named George Manning, father of Mrs. Runciman, of Putaruru, was reported as being missing. He was last seen sitting on the banks of the Oraka near the town bridge, and on a search being made his hat, coat and pipe were found on the bank. The bank at the spot is some ten or twelve feet high, and has a fairly dense growth of fern and scrub, and close to the spot where portion of his clothes were found it had given way.
. A search was made by the police late on Saturday night without result. Ali day on Sunday a large party assisted the police in dragging operations, but r.o sign, of the man was found. Although the Oraka is r.ot a broad stream, it runs fairly swiftly, and has numerous deep holes at the bends. The missing man is 84 years of age, and there seems no doubt that he fell into the river when the bank gave way. W ednesday.
The body of Mr. Manning was found this morning underneath the town bridge on the Putaruru-Tirau road.
