PUMICE LANDS.
TOWN BOARD’S SUPPORT. To Proposed Inquiry. The Putaruru Chamber of Commerce requested the support of the Town Board last Monday in an endeavour to obtain an inquiry into the suitability of pumice lands- for closer settlement.
Mr. Tomalin supported the request but thought the whole trouble was that the price of the land was too high. “ The land is worth £3O an acre, as a dairy farm—£lo for living and the other £2O goes to bolster up a fat living for non-workers in towns,” he added amid laughter. Mr. Barr Brown thought there was not as much suitable vacant land as was supposed, but held it would be a pity if land close to Putaruru was planted in forest. Mr. Yandle stated the bulk of the country was sick so far as sheep were concerned, otherwise it would be ex- ! cellent. It had to be heavily man- J ured, and in his ojiinion the land was ! • getting better every year. Kis home j farm used to be the stockyard for the J old company. Lambs had been sent Home from there up to 601 b in weight and the report was that they were too heavy. They < :.! not know, of course, they e . : of “ sick ” 1 country. The land ci. be made, but ) it was not poor man . mtiy, in his i opinion. The chairman: Or. Government j department tops the n. bet for New / Zealand at Westfield cenlly with | lambs from country which another department condemns as useless. It’s absurd. Mr. Lindsay: Tt is not committing us financially, is it? The chairman: No,; on’y moral support is asked for. It was then unanimously' decided that support be accorded the chain- 1 ber’s proposal.
