A judgment debtor at the Wanganui 'court, who .was sued for royalties on gravel, said that he never got a yard of gravel from the plaintiff’s pit in his life. Mr. Free, S.M., pointed out to debtor that he let judgment go against him by default and did not contest the matter. “ Well, your Worship,” replied debtor, “ I , treated the matter as a joke, seeing that I did not owe the money.” S.M.: “Just so. You treated the matter as a joke, and now the joke is against you.” A neat rejoinder was scored by the magistrate, Mr. E. C. l.evvey, at the Gisborne Police Court off counsel, ■who was pleading the danger which every person who loitered on the streets ran the risk of having to explain to the court how he earned his livelihood (says the Times). “ I am expecting to be arrested at any time myself,” remarked counsel. “ Oh, well,” retorted , the magistrate, “ there is such a thing as the good of ■ the community.” r- ' SYLVIA !
