What is the length of life of a rabbit? A little girl of the Perm, Matamata, got a young black and white rabbit as a pet in 1918. It died about a week ago, that well-fed specimen of the bunny tribe living 10 years. Taking into consideration the astonishing capacity of the species for reproduction of their kind, it would be interesting to know the number of progeny that would result over a decade from an original pair. Here is a comprehensive calculation to he worked out by one of those queer persons who delight in arithmetical problems of astronomical multitude.—Matamata Record.
At the annual meeting of the Thames Valley Power Board the chairman’s honorarium was reduced from £250 to £l5O. Mr. Flatt pointed out that times had changed, and there was not so much work for the chairman as formerly. The bulk of the business was transacted by the manager and chief engineer. Further, it was going to be a hard year and expenditure should be reduced as much as possible. “ The times demand it,” said Mr. Corbett, in seconding a motion for reduction in the honorarium. He realised that the amount received, even £250, was not compensation to the chairman, or the chairman of any local body for the work they put in. However, expenditure had to be reduced.
On Friday afternoon a lorry belonging to the N.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd., and driven by Mr. Jock Nieol, of Putaruru, became unmanageable while descending an incline on what is known as Atkinson’s block. It appears that the pin in the steering gear broke, with the result that the lorry went over a bank of some 200 feet, 'falling to the bottom. Nicol managed to jump clear, but broke his leg in doing so. The spot where the accident happened is somewhat isolated, and it was not until late in the afternoon that Nicol was found by some Maoris, who were returning to camp after the day’s work. Nieol, who has the reputation of being one of the company’s most steady drivers, was conveyed "to the Rotorua hospital. The fracture is a clean one, and Mr. Nicol is progressing very favourably.
