HISTORIC PEARLS.
THE HAPSBURG COLLECTION. An historic rope of pearls was seen at a dinner given at Cannes recently in "honour of the King of Sweden by Captain Jefferson D. Cohn, the racehorse owner. Their happy possessor was Mrs Cohn. These pearls formerly belonged to the Austrian imperial family, and when the ex-Emperor Charles attempted his spectacular coup d’etat in Hungary, arriving there in an aeroplane, it was with funds furnished partly by tike sale of the necklace. Tho rope contains 196 pearls, each as big as a cherry. Documents of the house of Hapsburg dating back 300 years refer to the pearls. It is stated that the early Austrian rulers sent agents through the East, getting the famous necklace together piece by piece, so that each great pearl should match its companions in beautiful, soft, creamy lustre, as well as in size and shape. Later, wdth the addition of pearls sent from Paris by Queen Marie Antoinette, the necklace was re-strung, and it is now the marvel of connoisseurs.
