“ Homework is a regular pest,” said Mr. F. Gapes, who presided at the householders' meeting at Northland school, Wellington. “ There is no doubt the ways of teaching now are different from those when 1 was a boy, but nowadays children worry for hours, night after night, over their homework, and many have to practice music also. “It takes up far too much of their time in the evening.” In supporting Mr. Gapes, Captain F. A. Macindoe said that homework was often very inconsistent and that children were taken to see moving pictures during school hours when they should be doing their lessons. It was decided that a recommendation should be sent to the School Committees' Association that homework should be kept down to an absolute minimum.
