STOCK SALES.
MORRINSVILLE. There was a heavy yarding of all classes of stock at the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co.’s sale at Morrinsville on Friday, and a large attendance of buyers. The supply of weaner heifer calves was considerably in excess of the demand and competition was not brisk. Beef was again firm, selling at late rates. Top price was secured for a fine pen of heavy fat steers sold on account of Mr. C. Stewart, Tahuna, which realised £l4 15s. Prices for sheep were firm. There was a good demand for store pigs and prices advanced. Porkers and baconers brought late rates. Dairy cattle were well represented, but the quality of the majority of the lines was only fair. Prices were:— Beef.—Heavy prime steers £l4 15s light fat steers, £9 17s fid to £lO 17s 6d; heavy fat cows, £9 to £10; medium fat cows, £6 15s to £8 2s 6d; lighter £5 5s to £6; fine fat heifers, £7 7s 6d to £8 15s; forward conditioned cows, £4 to £4 17s fid; store cows, £1 15s to £3 10s; runners, £4 15s; bulls for export, £3 5s to £7 15s; in-calf heifers, £4 15s to £5 ss; Jersey heifers calves, £2 to £2 19s; Jersey cross heifer calves, £1 12s fid to £2 7s 6d. Dairy Cattle.—Jersey and Jersey cross cows, £8 10s to £lO 10s; more backward sorts, £6 to £7; heifers, £8 to £l2. Sheep.—Prime fat wethers to 395; fat wethers, 335; .fat ewes, 24s to 26s fid; fat lambs, 24s to 30s; forwardconditioned wether lambs, 23s 4d; store wether lambs, 16s fid; ewes in lamb, 24s 6d. Pigs.—Medium baconers, £3 13s; light baconers, £2 15s; porkers, 30s to £2 ss; slips, 12s to 15s; weaners, 5s to 10s. MATAMATA. Dalgety and Company conducted their fortnightly sale at Matamata on Wednesday, when beef came forward in average numbers, no extraprime stuff being yarded. In the pig section there was an average yarding, prices showing a slight improvement on previous sales. Prices were as follow: Cattle.—Light fat heifers £5 18s to £7 17s ; medium fat cows £5 to £7 2s ; fresh-conditioned cows £4 5s to £5 ; store cows £2 10s to £3 15s ; best yearling Jersey heifers £4 2s to £4 10s, others £2 15s to £3 14s ; Shorthorn heifer calves £3 5s to £4 ; best Jersey heifers in calf £8 10s to £9 ss, others £6 to £6 10s. Sheep.—A small yarding was all disposed of ; empty ewes 10s 6d. HAMILTON. At the weekly stock sale conducted by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. in the Frankton yards on Tuesday, there was an average yarding of fat cattle. Values for prime ox and cow beef advanced on the previous week’s rates, plain and unfinished cattle selling at late quotations. A full entry of fat sheep were penned, and the yarding comprised chiefly good quality mutton for which competition was firm at further improved values. Fat and store pigs came forward in large numbers. Heavy to medium baconers and good porkers were in demand, and showed increased values; unfinished porkers sold at late rates. There was a better tone in the market for weaners and slips. Prices were:— Beef.— Good quality medium weight prime steers, £l3 Is to £l4; prime heavy cows, £9 5s to £lO 15s; medium weight fat cows and heifers, £7 10s to £8 12s fid; light and young fat cows, £6 10s to £7 ss; plain and unfinished cows, £4 7s fid to £5 10s. Mutton. —Prime fat wethers sold to 345, good quality lighter prime 335; extra good early shorn prime young ewes, 33s sd; best prime heavy ewes, 29s 3d to 29s 7d; lighter prime 27s 6d; medium quality and weights, 25s to 25s 6d; fat lambs, 225.
Pigs.—Prime heavy baconers, £4 9s to £4 15s; medium baconers, £3 16s to £4 2s; light, £3 Is to £3 8s; heavy porkers, £2 16s to £3 2s; medium porkers, £2 5s to £2 11s; light and unfinished porkers, 34s to 395; stores, 21s to 255; slips, 15s to 17s fid; weaners, 6s to 8s fid.
RETAIL PRICES OF NEW ZEALAND MEAT IN LONDON. The New Zealand Meat Producers Board has been advised by its London manager that the following prices were being quoted for New Zealand lamb and mutton in London on May 4:— Lamb (per pound). Legs 15d, shoulders 14d, loins 13d, necks Bd, breasts 6d. Mutton, Wether (per pound).—Legs lid, shoulders lOd, loins lOd, necks 71d, breasts 3 id.
