THE PUTARURU PRESS. ’Phone 28 - - - P.O. Box 44 Office - - - - Oxford Place THURSDAY, MAY 17, 1928. TOWN HALL PROFITS.
THE decision arrived at by tile Putaruru Town Board on Monday with reference to earmarking the profits from the present Town Hall for the purposes of a new building should commend itself to all who view' it in a dispassionate manner. For some time past the present building has been found to be too small for requirements, and it is an undoubted fact that the revenue from the same would be higher were there more comfort and convenience. Further, suitable fireproof offices for the Town Board, and social amenities such as a ladies’ rest room, are urgently required. These are necessary attributes to any live and progressive community.
Had the present building met .all modern requirements there might be no hesitation in taking any profits for reducing rates. In view of the urgent need in the immediate future for a new building there seems to be little to be said for such a proposal. After all, profits should be returned so far as is possible to the section that provides them. To some people the matter will appear premature. It is a chronic state with them, for such oppose all innovations, and in their blindness they opposed those far-seeing gentlemen who erected the present building over a decade ago. Were much attention paid to such opposition there would be little progress, for the present facts speak for themselves. The need is great, the site is there and the building can be erected at practically no cost to ratepayers. All that is lacking at the moment is the will to achieve.
