CARTING TIMBER.
FROM OKOROIRE MILL. The Council’s Terms. The solicitors to Messrs. Farrar End Finlay, proprietors of the Okoroire sawmill, wrote to the Matamata County Council asking for the council’s permission for their clients to cart rimu to the Okoroire station during the winter months. It was not likely that an amount of 40,000 feet would be carted, and the terms suggested were as follows: (1) Royalty Is 6d per 100 feet; (2) carting to be done in fine weather only; (3) Mr. Finlay to maintain-the road now being metalled at his own expense; (4) the lorry at present in use to be used; (5) rimu only to be carted.
To the above letter the county engineer (Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald) replied that the metalling would not be com-
pleted till about six weeks’ time. The agreement between the council and the mill owner provided that carting should be done only when the roads were dry. Before coming to any definite conclusion on the matter the council would require to know the quantity and nature of the loads, and stacking facilities at Okoroire station. The council had done all in its power to assist the business being carried on.
The solicitors further replied that an order for 30,000 feet of rimu had already been cancelled owing to the vet weather interfering with cartage. The metalling of the road would not be taken to prejudice the council’s right to refuse to allow carting after April 30. The works committee suggested carting be permitted during May to September on the following conditions: Royalty 3d per 100 feet in addition to royalty already payable; lorry to have twin pneumatic tyres or other vehicle to be aproved; owners to maintain road; no carting in bad weather. This suggestion was adopted.
