BRIGHTON CLIFFS.

RAPID EROSION. The rapid erosion of the cliffs between Brighton and Rottingdean is causing serious anxiety to the Brighton Corporation, arrd is drawing attention to the scheme for constructing an under cliff drive between Black Rock and Rottingdean. At some points the sea ka% advanced within 24 feet of the present coast road and unless work is commenced on the proposed drive almost immediately there is likely to be danger in the use of the road before the drive can be finished. The position is most acute at Avingdcan Gap, midway between Brighton and Rottingdean, where the tides are steadily attacking the sea defences.

Many members of the corporal ion would like to see work on the drive commenced at the earliest possible moment, but the difficulties arc formidable. It was at first thought that the scheme could be carried out lor £500,000, but it is now found that if will cost £1,000,000, and may cost £1,500,000.

Even if the Ministry of Transport agreed to bear half the the council would hesitate to proceed with the scheme, in view of otner commitments. The question is likely to come before the council again within a few’ months.
