MARKED CALVES.

BIG LINE FOR FIJI. Ten from Mr. A. Cunningham. Vvith the knowledge that the only safe basis on which to found a herd is by the use of the progeny of proved producing animals, Mr. J. A. Garnett, a large landowner of Fiji, purchased recently through Mr. S. H. Barton, the well-known breeder, 70 marked calves in the South Auckland district. Ten of the line were purchased from Mr. A. Cunningham, of Kiwitahi. One of these calves was really bred by Mr. J. M. Stewart, of Tahuna, the dam having been bought by Mr. Cunningham. The dam gave 471.781 bas a three-year-old. The sire was Hua Brook Civility, a remarkably-well-bred bull, line-bred to Hollybank Squire, the grandfather or. both sides of the pedigree. Another calf was by Marshland’s Silver Lad (Mr. Cunningham’s former herd sire) from a five-year-old that gave 413.561 b. Marshland’s Silver Lad, bought from Mr. W. J. Chynoweth, was by Magnet’s Glory (Maiden’s Glory Lad from Magnet’s Waif 2nd, 6051 b on grass) from a great dairy cow, Silver Topsy, by Majesty’s Fox from Primrose 32nd, one of the great Primrose family. The other eight calves were by Hua Brook Noble Wonder from dams with an average of 394.941 b. The average backing of these 10 calves is 404.481 b and two of the records were put up as two-year-olds and one as a three-year-old. All these records were done on grass alone. Hua Brook Noble Wonder is a particularly-well-backed bull. His sire is Fury’s Noble Boy and his dam Hawkesbury Peeress, 712.571 bof fat. This is a linebred K.C.B. bull, for his sire is a grandson of Holly Bank Squire and Majesty’s Eileen, a daughter of Majesty’s Fox from Eileen Maid 2nd, a daughter of K.C.B. His dam is a daughter of Grannie’s Knight (son of K.C.8.), the sire of Holly Oak Annie. Hawkesbury Peeress is an in-bred Soumise Jack (imp.) cow, being by Soumise Jack from Soum.se Empress, Soumise Lily being the dam of both.

Twenty calves came from Mr. L. W. Bishop, of Tirau. Last year’s •figures from Mr. Bishop’s herd of 75 cows were 324.521 bin 273 days. The calves were by Royal Oak’s Conqueror, whose grandparents on the sire’s side were in-bred to Sultan’s Daisy, while his dam, Holly Oak’s Laura, claims K.C.B. and Soumise Tom as grandparents. The granddam of Royal Oak Conqueror gave 5961 bat three years. This bull is a very striking individual.

All the dams of the calves referred to are grade Jerseys. The prices paid for the calves varied from £5 to £7.
