CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
PUTARURU MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Monday last, when the following members were present: Messrs. J. W. Barr Brown (chairman), J. P. Benton, H. J. W. Scott, C. G. Alcorn, A. R. Vosper, J. Simpson, C. C. Neal, G. G. Griffiths and- A. H. Dukeson (secretary). Meeting Night, After some considerable discussion ; on a recent minute, it was- decided, in view of the present date clashing with the Town Board meeting, to alter the date of the monthly meeting t<* the first Monday in the month. Resignation: The resignation of Mr. D. Di-Sned-don 1 . from the Chamber was accepted with- regret. Honorary Members. The. chairman suggested that- as was customary the postmaster and stationmaster be made honorary members.. Mr. Alcorn suggested that the matter be deferred for one month, as he understood, a member stayed away from meetings for this reason.
After some discussion an amendment by Messrs. Alcorn and Griffiths to defer the matter was defeated, and a motion, by Messrs. Neal and Benton that they be made honorary members forthwith was carried. Advertising District. Mr. Alcorn supported a suggestion, carried over from a previous meeting, that some record of the facts covering the growth of the town and district, and giving an indication of the wealth and prospects in the same, be compiled and. put in booklet form. A district like Putaruru needed outside capital to hasten its development, and without such a record it was difficult to obtain such finance. For quite a modiest expenditure a very valuable publication could be secured.
Mr. Vosper stated that the district didn't want anything in the nature of “ boosting.” More important were satisfied settlers who would advertise it themselves,
Mr. Scott asked- if it would be legitimate to quote certain figures now that Arapuni was going down. Mr. Alcorn agreed that nothing but facts should be given, as if inaccurate information were compiled it would only be detrimental to their aims. He moved; that the Chamber compile and publish a statistical record showing the progress that had taken place, and also information of interest to investors- in general. Mr. C. C. Neal seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Messrs. J. W. Barr Brown, C. G. Alcorn and G. G. Griffiths were then appointed a sub-committee to compile the record' for submission to the Chamber. It was decided that the first meeting of the aommittee be held in a month’s time. Second-class Timber.
Mr. Neal urged that representations be made to the Government to allow the export of second-class limber. Putaruru lived' largely on the timber industry; and he pointed out that the unemployed' of to-day were the old age pensioners of to-morrow.. The speaker Held that where there l was a glut in any trade the (Rivera—ment should' do all in its power tia assist.
Mr. Benton stated that her had a brother in the trade, and ho had assured him quite recently that he could get: ri'd’ of all such timber he could get hold of in Australia. After some further discussion it was decided to secure further information on the subject, and tfte sec- '. retary was deputed to endeavour to obta-iv same.
