IT is to be hoped that Mr. Banks’ I broad hint anent the establishment of I a High School in Putaruru will he I taken to heart by parents in Putaruru and surrounding districts. We say parents, advisedly, for we take it for granted that a school committee which has shown such progressive energy as the local one has dene, will naturally seize the opportunity mentioned by Tuesday’s visitor, and immediately organise to that end.
No matter how quickly or thoroughly they set to work—and the time factor should not be lost sight of in view of the June conference—their efforts will not be successful without the whole-hearted co-operation of parents.
There is no more priceless gift which can be given the younger generation than that of a good all round education. It has a national value, as well as a personal one, and even though perhaps some may consider the curriculum could be overhauled with advantage, there will indeed be few who will not look with favour upon the present proposal. At no time in the Empire’s history has there been greater need for clear thought. This not only applies to our leaders but to the great mass of people in general, and there is great need for training the mind just at the time when it is most pliable and receptive—the High School period. Coupled with the new proposal, if carried to a successful conclusion, is the automatic inducement it carries for the present headmaster to remain in charge. This is no small matter, for few teachers have the all round ability which characterises the present head’s work. The two factors combined should appeal to all, and it is to be hoped that when the proposal is gone on with parents will readily .make any necessary sacrifices which may be entailed, so that at no distant date, higher educational facilities may be provided locally.
