PUKETURUA REQUEST. Metalling Bathe’s Flat. Messrs. W. King and F. Peters, of Pulceturua, waited on the Matamata County Council on Friday with reference to improvements to Bathe’s flat. Mr. King stated that owing to the fact that the settlers had lost their postmistress, and also their post office, 48 had signed a petition to establish a rural delivery from Putaruru to Patetere (Salvation Army farm) and then to Puketurua and back to Putaruru. To carry this out however, Bathe’s flat would have to be attended to, as it was impassable in winter. Mr. Peters stated this obstacle was the only obstacle to establishing the service. The chairman: Yes, it’s a rotten formation and foundation. The engineer stated it was a bad time of the year to do work, and he could not take the responsibility for grading this portion now. Cr. Darby stated that if the settlers were not assisted they would be back in the position they were ten years ago. and would have to get their mails from Putaruru. He offered to set aside £2OO in next year’s estimates, and if settlers gave assistance it might be possible to do a great deal. The more assistance the settlers gave the more of the £2OO could be used for metalling on which he hoped to get £1 for £1 subsidy. He suggested that the matter be left in the hands of the engineer and himself after meeting settlers on the spot. Mr. King stated that the flat was one mile, and that the longest cart from Bathe’s quarry would be threequarters of a mile. On the motion of Crs. Anderson and Rollett it was decided to adopt Cr. Darby’s suggestion.
