MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.
THE MARCH MEETING. The March meeting of the Matamata County Council was held at Tirau on Friday. Present: Crs. J. W. Anderson (chairman, Tirau), H. Rollett (Peria), J. Bruce (Karapiro), E. J. Darby (Putaruru), K. S. Cox (Tokoroa), W. H. Allen (Okoroire), P. Dee (Te Poi), S. H. Judd (Maungatautari). Leave of absence was granted to Cr. W. S. Wilson, of Matamata riding. Peria Request. Messrs. W., E. T. W. and J. R. Wright drew the council’s attention to the state of the road opposite their place. The road was low, and when it rained the water collected to a depth of about a foot. They suggested that a culvert be put in. The engineer explained that the remedy was to lift the road.—Left to the riding member and engineer. Use of a Road. Mr. G. T. Newsome, of Waharoa, sought the council’s permission to have the use of a road lately used for Kelly’s sawmill. The property previously included the road, and the writer desired the original conditions restored. It was stated that the road was of no use to the general public, and the request was granted, on the motion of Crs. Darby and Rollett, subject to Mr. Weeks (neighbour) having no objection. Kairnai Hill. The District Highways Council wrote thanking the council for its decision to contribute £SOO towards the cost of metalling the Kairnai hill. The letter stated the bottom corner would be local rhyolite rock, which would later be coated with shingle. Work would be commenced this week, and the council was asked whether it could make a contribution towards the cost this year.—Received. Arapuni Dam. The District Engineer (Arapuni) advised in reply to a letter from the council that the work of forming the road approaches to the dam was in hand and would be completed in the near future.—Received . Waiteti Bridge. In reply to representations from the council asking that a bridge across the Waiteti stream at Arapuni, which was destroyed when the river was diverted, should be replaced, the District Engineer reported that he was communicating with the Electrical Engineer at Hamilton on the subject and would write again later.—Received. Committee’s Report. The works and finance committee made the following recommendations, which were adopted by the council:— “ Motor Lorry Traffic.—That a conditional prohibition of the use of motor lorries during the months of May to October, inclusive, be effected under clause 4, regulation 9, of the Motor Lorry Regulations in respect of the same roads as last year, and such other roads as the council may decide.
“ Putaruru-Arapuni Road.— That application be made to have the Ara-puni-Putaruru-Tapapa road declared a main highway to connect No. I and No. 18 Main Highways, and that it be suggested that the Public Works Department should contribute threetenths of the cost of maintenance of Putaruru-Arapuni section until the completion of the works at Arapuni.
“ Subdivision of Land.-—That proposals for subdivisions be not considered by the council until the applicant has given the county engineer an opportunity of inspecting the ground in company with his surveyor or other representative who can point out the proposed location of roads and reserves and until the proposed layout is to the approval of the county engineer. That a copy of the plans shall be provided for retention by the council. That plans involving proposed new roads shall show levels, grades and other particulars as required by section 116 of the Public Works Act.”
