MATAMATA COUNTY WORKS.
ENGINEER’S MONTHLY REPORT. The following report was submitted to the Matamata County Council «n -Friday by the engineer, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald:— “ Bitumen work made slow progress during the past month. The main street of Waharoa is finished, and 19A main highway will he completed with about two good days v.ork, after which the Matamata-Turanga-o-moana road will be taken in hand. Karapiro deviation is nearing completion, the cutting having pierced the hill and reached the present road. Ross has completed Horahora loan metalling and is now carting shingle to Matai road. Kinnear is carting shingle to White’s road, and when this is completed he will cart metal to Mangawhero road. Jackson has completed his contract for carting shingle to Totman’s road. Hart is now carting shingle to the Okoroire-Te Poi road, and when this is finished he will complete the road ff rom Okoroire to Harwood’s and the road to Waiomou mill. Davidson’s road, Te Poi, has had the surface improved With shingle. The surfacing of the Soldiers’ road, Hinuera, is in hand. Metal has been quarried at McNaughton’s pit for use on Buckland road, the carting to be done by local settlers. “ The Waihou bridge, Hinuera, is now in hand. Hills has nearly completed the earthwork approaches and Tate and Hodge have commenced w work on the abutments. Hardwood * for Waihou bridge, Okoroire, is expected to arrive at any time and it is proposed to close the old bridge at once. The new roads east of the bridge are now to ready to grade except the portion immediately against the bridge. Earthwork on the western approach will be recommended forthwith and for the next three or four weeks the road will be in a bad condition for traffic. “ Hardwood will arrive at once for bridges at French Pass and Mangamahu stream, Okauia. Paraonui bridge, Tokoroa, is now in hand. Two small bridges on Taotaoroa road, Tirau riding, require considerable re-
pairs. ‘ ‘The horse teams are still in Maungatautari area. Trucks were engaged in general repair work on various roads, including Pairere-Te Poi, • Totman’s, Tirau-Okoroire, Webster’s, 9 18A and Maungatautari main road. “ Mechanical graders have run over most roads. Road rollers were engaged on bitumen works. “No. 19 Main Highway, south of Tokoroa, has been rounded up and the portion on Mangaiti deviation requires a considerable amount of surface repairs which are being put in hand. “ Now that the Main Highways Board has put in hand the surfacing of the remaining portion of the Kaimai hill it is proposed to shingle the d remaining gap at the foot of the hill. P No. 18 Main Highway between White’s road and Tapapa is in urgent need of resurfacing and this work is being put in hand with Waimakariri shingle. “ A leak in the Cambridge water main caused a large washout on Maungatautari main road, which the Borough Council attended to without loss of time. “ A conviction was obtained in the Court against an offender who had taken sand from a roadside.” The report was adopted.
