STEERING GEAR FAILS.

CAR RUNS UP BANK, j Occupants Unhurt. While attempting to turn the corner opposite the Opal Springs, on the Springs road, Matamata, the steering gear of a car driven by Mr. B. Rallison failed to work and the car plunged up a bank and finally came to a standstill with the front wheels ten feet above the road. The occupants managed to get out of the car without dislodgj ing it from its perilous position. Messrs. H. Mason and Holmes, who Were working near by, rendered assistance and the car was gradually lowered to the road. The occupants of the car, besides the driver, v'ere Mesdames Rallison and Carter and a child. Fortunately no injuries were sustained, and the car was undamaged. Those who saw the car in its perilous position expressed surprise at the fact that it did not overturn. The authorities would do well to erect a number of warning signs at the top of this particular hill, for on more than one occasion serious accidents have been averted by the fraction of a second. The fact that a onecar bridge is at the foot of the hill and that sight of it is obscured until within a few yards of it is in itself sufficient reason for the erection of signs.—Matamata Record.
