ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
MATAMATA BRANCH MEETS.
A meeting of the Matamata branch of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society was held on Friday evening, when Mr. W. Livingstone presided over Messrs. J. Amunsden, D. N. Hay, O. Stanley, T. Stanley, S. Mason, L. Mason and the secretary (Mr. C. Green). It was decided to make a recommendation to the Auckland society that signposts should be erected at rivers closed to fishing so as to aid strangers who were not familiar with the rules regarding the local rivers.
It was decided to request the Auckland society to secure for this district a consignment of Virginian quail. Members pointed out that these birds were of great assistance in destroying grass grubs and other such pests. It was decided to recommend the Auckland society to make a close season of the Matamata county for all native and imported game during the coming season. Should this be effected the Auckland society has promised to liberate a consignment of 300 partridges in this district. The secretary was instructed to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs asking if it was possible to obtain permission to liberate oppossnms in the bush reserves around this district. It was stated that if this was done considerable revenue would be received by both the Acclimatisation society and the Government by payment of license fees by trappers. It was reported that five cans of trout fry had been liberated in the Omahine stream. Notification was received that a consignment of 50 pheasants is to be liberated in the district this month.
