OUTLET WANTED.
MAUNGATAI TARI TO ARAPUNI
At Friday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council a letter was received from Mr. J. E. Makgill, on behalf of Oriepinga settlers, pointing out that the diversion of the Waikato river had destroyed the crossing over the Wai Titi stream which gave access to Arapuni end Putaruru. The settlers understood that steps had been taken to provide a new road, but a considerable amount of work, including a bridge, woul 1 be needed to make it suitable. The request had been laid before the engineer in charge at Arapuni, but so far no satisfactory reply had been received. The old road was in the Matamata county and the new one in '■he Waipa county, and as the settlers were situated in the Matamata county, they asked the council to take the matter up.
Cr. Judd pointed out that the bridge destroyed was put up three years ago by the settlers, and was used by the Public Works Department for carting poles, etc. The settlers now had no access except via Horahora. The estimated cost of the bridge was £750.
The engineer pointed out that if the bridge had not been there the Public Works would have had to build one. Cr. Allen held that if they supported the request for the bridge the next move would be a request for the road
to be opened. Cr. Judd opposed this idea, stating that the settlers fully understood the position. It was simply replacing a bridge which they had lost, ahd that they would have to bear the cost of opening up the road themselves if they wanted it. It was shingle formation and cars could run anywhere. On the motion of Crs. Allen and Judd, it was decided to ask the Public Works Department to repla.ee the bridge out of Arapuni funds.
