PUTARURU TOWN BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The following members of the Putaruru Town Board attended the February meeting held in the Town Hall on Monday last: Messrs. G. G. Griffiths (chairman), W. Yandle, J. C. Tomalin, A. E. Barr Brown, C. C. Neal, H. W. Lindsay and A. H. Dukeson, junr. (clerk). Analysis of Water. The Department of Health wrote advising that the cost of examination of water samples from proposed sources of a town water supply would be: Bacteriological examination, £2 2s; chemical analysis, £3 3s. The samples would require to be taken in specially prepared vessels, and Mr. Martindale had been instructed to attend to the matter. Mr. Barr Brown stated that he had been unavoidably absent from the previous meeting, and was not sure of what had passed, but he thought that in vie w of the engineer’s report they should cancel the test. Mr. Tomalin strongly supported this action, and maintained that the cost of a scheme would ruin the town. “ It seems to me,” he added, “ that all of you have made up your minds to have water at any cost.” Mr. Neal held that three parts of the ratepayers favoured a scheme if it was at all possible. A deputation had waited on the board and asked for water, and in view of the question of health and fire he thought the board should obtain a full report on the whole question. The chairman urged that they should do their duty by the deputation and get all the details possible By deferring the question for a month they would be in a better position to give a judgment with a clear conscience.
Mr. Yandle, though opposed to the scheme, generally favoured this view. A proposal to cancel** the test already arranged for was defeated by four votes to two, and it was then unanimously agreed to defer the question till next meeting. Arrears of Rates. The County Council forwarded a list of outstanding rates within the town district, and it was decided to issue a final notice to each ratepayer concerned, following which immediate steps would be taken to recover same unless some satisfactory arrangement for payment was made. Town District. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote asking the board to pass a formal resolution declaring the town district to not form part of the county and also for a certificate signed by some competent authority that the population was over 500. A member: It’s an absolute farce. The Government appointed a commission which sat in Putaruru and took all this evidence, and now they want this. It was agreed that the ways of Government Departments were past understanding, and that the information be supplied. Finances for January. The treasurer submitted the following statement of cash received during January:—
