TAPAPA SETTLEMENT.
SOLDIERS’ REQUEST. Messrs. Siddall, Moore, Clements and Murray, settlers on the Tapapa Soldiers’ Settlement, waited on the Matamata County Council on Friday last, to see if improvements could be made to their by-road before winter set in. Mr. Siddall who acted as spokesman, stated that work now done by the surfaceman was of little use, and he asked if the road could be sanded. The engineer explained that some time ago the settlers had offered to do the carting, but as it was done in their spare time a difficulty arose iri Tegard to spreading, as the county could not provide a man at odd times. Mr. Siddall stated the only feasible pit was the council’s about half-a-mile away. Continuing, the engineer said that an agreement with a previous settler provided for 150 yards of sand being carted ;at 2s 6d per yard, the council to provide a man to spread and the settlers to keep the water-tables open. Cr. Darby pointed out that no metalling could be done out of rates. Councillors had only a few pounds per year per mile of road. In his riding settlers had carted metal or shingle free. After some discussion it was agreed that the settlers be paid 2s 6d per yard for carting, and Is Bid per hour for spreading, out of riding funds. Mr. Moore was appointed to act for the settlers concerned.
