A good story is told of George Griffen, whose death in Australia was reported recently. Alick Bannerman, one of the greatest stonewall batsmen of the day, was at the wicket during a test match, and for 25 minutes had not scored a run. Suddenly he pushed one past mid-on and ran a single, when Griffen, sitting on the stand, shouted, out loud enough for everybody round to hear: “ For the love of Mike, Alick, be careful!”
