The sight of a sleek cat wandering over the Invercargill Post Office counter on Christmas Eve with a label attached to its neck created the impression that the cat was intended for transmission through the post and probably as a Christmas box (says the Otago Daily Times). A perusal of the words on the label, however, showed that it was merely a novel method of conveying the season’s greetings from the post officials to the public. ■ “ Under Mussolini I found Rome and Italy generally much changed for the better,” said the Rev. Dr. Cecil Markane, Rector of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, to a Christchurch Press representative, on his return from a twelve months’ trip abroad. “ In fact I found almost a new Italy. Mussolini seems to command the veneration of the people, and even if he is assassinated Fascism will go on. He has trained the Fascists so well that the regime will continue even if he is shot. The spirit of industry is great, and there is little unemployment. Italy is scarcely recognisable to one who knew it twenty years ago. Particularly is this so in respect to the reverence shown to the Catholic Church. Dr. Morkane reiterated that it was difficult to exaggerate the change in Italy. The people were happy, well-dressed, and well-fed; the trains were punctual and regular, and the services excellent; the slums had been purified, and a great building programme was being carried out in Rome.
