KAIMAI HILL.

COST OF IMPROVEMENTS. Matamata Contributes £SOO. The Matamata County Council received last Friday from the district highways engineer the detailed cost of widening and metalling the Kaimai hill, and a query as to what proportion the council would contribute towards the cost. Details were as follow: Formation. Clearing bush and scrub, 186 chains at £l, £lB6 ; excavation, 28,000 yards at 2s 6d, £3500 for clay, and at £l, £3OO for rock ; culverts, 400 cubic feet at ss, £IOO ; contingencies, £414 ; total, £4500. Metalling.—Foundation course 12ft by 6in broken to 3in, 186 chains by 14 2-3, £ll2O ; top course shingle 12 by 3, 186 chains by 7 1-3, 1400 cubic yards at 15s, £IOSO ; total, £2170. Grand Total.—£69oo. Cr. Rollett thought the price for shifting clay was excessive. \ Cr. Judd held that there was an unnecessary amount shifted. Cr. Cox held that they should only contribute the amount of rates collected, as the road was of little use to settlers on the flat, Cr. Judd seconded this motion. The chairman pointed out that the Highways Board could declare the Kaimai a county road. Cr. Judd objected, saying they dare not do it. After further discussion the motion was withdrawn and on the suggestion of Crs. Allen and Dee it was agreed to contribute £SOO spread over two years.
