REVISED HORSE EVENTS.

AN EXHIBITION TRCT,

Matamata A. and P. Show.

A meeting of the executive of the Matamata A. and P. Association was held on Friday night. Present: Messrs. J. E. West (president), D. B. Higgins, M. Madill, S. Gunn, F. Richmond, A. S. Thirlwall, H. Lewis, T. Carter, R. K. Garland, H. Rollett, C. G. Payze, and the secretary, Mr. F. N. Truelove. An apology for absence was received from Mr. T. H. Prowse. The weight-guessing competition was eliminated, and a sheaf-tossing contest established. The meeting was mainly occupied in arranging for printing and other materials required for the show. Mr. Gunn reported that the previous judge of the cooking (Mrs. L. Flower) had recommended that no cooking be done for competition on the day of the show. This was a fair provision to make in view of the fact that exhibitors from a distance were obliged to do their cooking prior to show day.—Approved. Mr. Garland reminded the association of the need of making it clear that the association prize money was not to be reduced on account of the Jersey Breeders’ Club subsidy, and that the full money be paid out irrespective of the number of entries.

The points were approved unanimously. Mr. Payze said Mr. J. G. Duxfield asked if the committee would prefer that his prize, previously given for the best dairy cow, and over which there had been some confusion, could be devoted to something else, such as the best factory turnout. It was merely a suggestion. The secretary was instructed to interview Mr. Duxfield on the matter.

Mr. Higgins submitted the revised open jumping events, which were most interesting, being a departure from the stereotyped events. The new rules are those of the International Horse Show. The first prize is seven guineas and the second three guineas. The full conditions will he published in the schedule. There is also a “ whistling race,” wherein the man rides a distance, dismounts, receives a sealed envelope containing the name of a simple tune. The lady partner is to guess the tune as the man whistles it, write it down, and the man takes the envelope and name enclosed back to the starting point. The Hampstead Heath race, wherein the gentlemen are blindfolded and driven on a long rein by lady partners, should provide some amusement.

The Gretna Green race should also prove diverting. Mr. Payze reported that Mr. JTims had agreed to put on an exhibition trot.—Accepted with thanks.
