MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.
JANUARY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mata- I mata County Council was held at Tirau on Friday, the following members attending: Crs. J. W.- Anderson (chairman), H. C. Rollett (Peria), S. H. Judd . (Maungatautari), J. Bruce (Karapiro), W. S. Wilson (Matamata), E. J. Darby (Putaruru), K. S. Cox (Tokoroa), W. H. Allen (Okoroire), P. Dee (Te Poi). Messrs. C. F. E. Barton (clerk) and M. E. Fitzgerald (engineer) were also in attendance. Whakamaru Road. The New Zealand Perpetual Forests, Ltd., Auckland, wrote pointing .out that the council agreed to make an allowance of £2O per annum for maintaining the above road, and as the year was up they asked for the council’s cheque for this sum. Cr. Cox: We only promised that on condition that the road was legalised. It was decided to reply in these terms. Karapiro Deviation. Messrs. Richards and Dowling, contractors for the deviation on the Cambridge-Tirau road, asked for an extension of the time limit far the job to the end of March. The engineer stated it was only a matter of a few weeks. It was agreed to extend the time, as requested. Timber Rating. The Rural Counties’ Association advised that the levy of id per 100 feet on timber was reasonable as a debt. Collection of the levy presented some difficulties, aha it was proposed to ask the Sawmillers’ Association to do the /work on a 12 J per cent commission basis.—Agreed to. Agreement with Board. The Putaruru Town Board returned the agreement arrived at with the county with reference to rates and other financial matters duly signed. On the motion of Crs. Anderson and Judd it was decided that the council sign and seal the document. Maungatautari Reserve. The Leamington Town Board advised that it had decided to leave the control of the above reserve in the council’s hands. A similar letter was received from the Waikato County Council. Cr. Judd: It should be a native bird sanctuary. Cr. Darby seconded this, and felt sure it would be a prized possession in years to come.
The council decided to apply to get the reserve gazetted as suggested. Dog Tax.
On the motion of Crs. Anderson and Wilson it was decided that the dog tax for the coming year be the same as formerly, 2s 6d for working dogs and 10s for all others. Drainage Boards.
Cr. Darby asked that the engineer inspect the swampy area near Mr. Vosper’s farm at Putaruru, in company with him, and that the clerk advise Mr. Vosper as to the method of forming a drainage board.—Agreed to. I General. On the recommendation of the Works Committee the salary of the assistant engineer was increased to £3O per month, and two clerks deceived increases of 10s per week each as per agreement. Accounts. Accounts totalling £4IOO 4s Gd were passed for payment.
