LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr. T. F. Snell, of Putaruru, is with the party of South Auckland bowlers who are touring the East Coast this week.

Several valuable dogs have been poisoned in Putaruru during the past week, but so far no trace of the origin of the poison has been discovered.

A special train of 40 trucks will arrive in Putaruru to-morrow (Friday) with a consignment of lambs for the Matarawa Land Company, Tokoroa.

Mr. Hollis, of Malic re (Ohura, King Country), was* successful among over 50 applicants for the position of manager of the Hinuera Dairy Company’s factory.

Advice from Pukekohe is to the effect that on account of the dry weather feed for stock has become so short that cows are being dried off. Many herds are being milked only once a day.

; Haymaking is proceeding apace ir. the Matamata district. The crops this year are not nearly so heavy as 1 for last summer, but of course a , similar weight per acre could not be - expected in view of the difference in the seasons. Many more farmers are going* in for ensilage this year ; in * fact most of them are. doing so, but a few are waiting to" see how the majority gets on. A new Ford story is well worth telling. A small, hot, tired man called to see Mr. Ford, and so persistent .was he that he was admitted. “ Say, are you the Mr. Ford? ” asked the visitor. “ 1 am,” replied Mr. Ford. “ The feller who invented them cars, you know ? ” ’*l invented them.” “ The chap who’s responsible?” “I accept full responsibility.” “ Then come out and give it a push ! ” A well-known Mangateparu farmer, a former resident of Buckland, has a few tales to tell of drought conditions in the Pukekohe district, which he visited recently. ** The ground is so dry,” he solemnly asserted, “ that the cows can’t see the grass for the dust their breathing kicks up. I also saw a man trying to dig post-holes, but his spade struck sparks off the soil.” Next please. Considerable surprise was caused locally when it became known that a Putaruru resident had been appointed coroner for a district embracing Matamata. In reply to previous representations on the mat-

ter of a coroner the Department of Justice had indicated that such an officer would be appointed at Matamata. Seemingly on account of the Arapuni works and the sawmills the department has decided that Putaruru has more need of a coroner than has Matamata. Mata mu La Record. While agreeing that Lindbergh was a modest young man, and did not want a fuss made of him, Mr. A. J. Smith, of Palmerston North, who recently returned from a trip to the United States, when, in conversation with a Standard reporter criticised the hero-worshipping of that aviator when he was taken on a tour of the States, saying that his receptions were even bigger than those which would be given to the President. A month ago a letter he had received by air mail in San Francisco had on its stamp a picture of “ The Pride of St. Louis,” the airman’s plane, and other matter commemorative of Lindbergh’s Atlantic flight.
