PUTARURU DOMAIN BOARD.

CHANGE OF CONTROL. Report To Be Obtained. On Monday the Putaruru Town Board sat as a Domain Board and formally took over control of the local domain of 68 acres from the previous committee. Correspondence was read from the Department of Lands and Survey enclosing copy of an Order-in-Council proclaiming the Town Board as the new controlling authority. A note from the late secretary (Mr. J. R. O. Lochhead) showed that the bank balance was £9O 15s 2d, with outstanding accounts amounting to £5.

Mr. Tomalin: There’s some good timber there which we ought to be able to sell and have some more money to spend on the town. Mr. McDermott: We would not be allowed to.

The chairman explained that any moneys derived from the property could only be spent on the property or in purchasing other lands for a similar purpose. He had in mind the creation of a fund to buy a Recreation Ground for the town for football, cricket and other purposes. In his opinion they should get Mr. Goudie to prepare a comprehensive report on the kind of trees growing, their marketable value, and uses, and a scheme for future planting. Mr. Tomalin: We don’t need anyone to tell us how to sell them. We’ll get £6 10s a hundred for posts and there is also firewood;

Mr. Lindsay: I think we should know what the trees are. Also it would be a good idea before cutting to have them marked. Mr. McDermott: I am sure Mr. Goudie would do it and treat us well. The chairman: I think it should be done at once, so that we shall be in a position to plant the balance this autumn, if necessary.

Mr. Tomalin: Yes, let’s get right ahead with it. I’d like to work it on a system and as we cut a portion each year see that it is planted. Eventually it was unanimously decided to inspect the property on the following Wednesday, and to ask Mr. Goudie to prepare a comprehensive report on the value of the trees and on future work.
