LOCAL AND GENERAL.

“ If America could turn out the quality of butter and cheese that the Dominion does, they would very soon let the world know about it,” said Mr. A. A. Thornton, late chief dairy produce grader at Auckland, during the course of some remarks to a Morrinsville Star reporter yesterday. Mr. J. C. Tomalin, who has just returned from a flying trip north as far as Dargaville, reports that the countryside is very parched in places, and unless prolonged rain falls soon matters will be serious' for many farmers. In Mr. Tomalin’s opinion there is plenty of land yet available for settlement if the right measures are taken, while when comparing districts he is quite satisfied that Overdale country is standing up to the drought as good as any seen.

A notable feature of the Waikato East Tennis Tournament was the fine form displayed by Miss N. Beverley, who was successful in winning five out of six events, as follows: Ladies’ championship singles; championship and handicap doubles with her sister, Miss M. Beverley; handicap singles; and combined championship doubles, with Mr. A. C. Thompson. Through stress of play Miss Beverley, who with Mr. Danneford, reached the final of the combined handicap doubles, decided not to play in that match. In the opinion of local enthusiasts, if Miss Beverley had the opportunity to play against better players than herself she would reach high rank in the game.
