SEVERELY BURNED.
PUTARURU RESIDENT. About 2 o’clock on Tuesday morning a tent in which Mr. S. Henderson and a Maori named Ua were sleeping was completely burned. So far as can be ascertained the fire was caused through a lighted cigarette butt which was thrown away by Ua, ■who awcfke some time previously and bad a smoke. The whole tent was in flames before the sleepers awakened, and before Henderson could disentangle himself from the burning wreckage of th'e tent he was severely burned about the hands, arms and legs, his companion escaping with little injury. Mr. Geo. Deyell, who with Henderson was contracting at Tapapa, where the fire occurred, rendered first aid and brought Mr. Henderson to Putaruru for medical attention. Later Mr. Henderson was taken to the Waikato Hospital for further treatment of his injuries, which, though very painful, are not regarded as being serious. The tent, clothes and other belongings of both parties were completely destroyed.
