SEEKING A QUORUM.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Apathy of Members. At the appointed time for the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce to meet on Monday night, only the president, secretary and press representative had put in an appearance. A quarter of an hour later the phone was brought into use, and by its means a further promise of attendance was secured. Not to be beaten the * <<! heads ” then decided on a stroll up the streets to beat up a quorum. Three calls produced another towards the number necessary, and an additional member was still required to conform to the rules. At the last call the member was found hard at work with his saw making alterations to his shop. “ Sorry,” was his reply, “ I have been going since four this morning, and I must get finished.” Just then his better half appeared on the scene, and on the position being explained to her, without hesitation she remarked: “ Off you go; I’ll use the saw.” The party then returned and the meeting was opened exactly an hour late.
