HAWKERS NOT WANTED.

HEAVY FEES LIKELY. At the last meeting- of the Putaruru Town Board strong- comments were made on the number of hawkers who were canvassing the town and district, and the determination was expressed by all members that a heavy license fee should be imposed on them. Mr. Lindsay: They are. an intolerable nuisance. They go to houses when only the women-folk are there, and after carefully looking out for the dog-, annoy them. (Laughter). A member: Yes, and if they don’t buy anything- some of them pick up any bits of lead, or bottles, which are lying- about. ■ (Laughter). The chairman: I think we should g-o to the limit in regard to fees as far as we can. Mr. Yandle: Yes; we don’t want them. A member: We must protect those who pay rates. The matter then dropped pending the meeting arranged for to deal with the by-laws.
