LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The office of the Putaruru Press will be closed on Christmas Day and on Monday, December 27. Will advertisers please note, and those desiring replace notices please hand in same to-morrow (Friday). The death occurred on Tuesday morning of Mr. David Roberts, of Ostend, Waiheke Island, father of Messrs. Benjamin and Thomas Roberts, of Matamata, and Mr. Chas. Roberts, of Rotorua. The deceased had at one time been of Hokianga, and was living in retirement at Waiheke. The output of the Hinuera dairy factory, as reported during the early months of .the season, has been well maintained during the past month. Th£ November figures show an increase over the corresponding period of last year of 456 boxes, or 22.6 per cent. The percentage increase from the beginning of the season is 21.9 per cent. The company’s product has also graded well, 1127 consecutive boxes having been marked “ finest,” there being no second-grade intervening. The deodoriser is due to arrive next week, and it is hoped that when it is installed feed flavours peculiar to the district will be entirely eliminated and a higher average quality maintained. Farmers can be sure of getting all spare parts for International Harvester machinery from Ben Roberts, wheelwright and blacksmith, Tower road, Matamata, the district agent, telephone 149.* Next Friday Tom Mix in “ The Best Bad Man ” will be screened in Putaruru. It is a Fox production, and Tony the wonder horse is featured in this story. The ever-popular Tom Mix is supported by a strong sporting cast, and the picture is a great “ draw.”*

There is evidence of more activity in regard to inquiries for farm lands in the Putaruru district of late, and there is every prospect of sales eventuating.

At the Presbyterian Church service qt Putaruru last Sunday morning Rev. Brabyn made feeling reference to the passing of Rev. Hammond, ' and the congregation joined in singing the hymn, “ Forever With the Lord.”

A report from the works committee of the Matamata County Council included a recommendation that the council purchase a new typewriter. “ Insert the word ‘ English ’ and I’ll suport ;t,” stated Cr. Judd. The additional word was heartily agreed to without further comment.

The desirability of closely examining goods for the trade mark before purchasing, was brought home to a Matamata lady rather unpleasantly recently. She had bought a rubber apron to give to a friend, and, as the friend was a particularly patriotic individual, and the time within a day or so of the unveiling of the Matamata War Memorial, the lady hardly Celt the “ joy of giving ” when she noted at the inside bottom of the apron the words, “ Made in Germany.” —Matamata Record.

When local bodies are choosing dog collars from the samples annually submitted, almost invariably the kind of collar most suitable for the purpose of a hames strap is chosen, even at a slight difference in cost. At the Matamata County Council on Friday there was a division of the opinion. Possibly the increase in the use of motors for farm work was telling. The voting was even on a show of hands, but the chairman’s casting vote gave the hames straps another victory.

Mr. Walter Price, of Matamata, met with another motor accident on Tuesday. He was driving a lorry on the Waharoa-Wardville road, near where the collision occurred recently. Another lorry was coming some distance behind, and the driver happened to look across the fields for a few moments, and when he turned his head to the front again Mr. Price’s lorry had disappeared. It was discovered overturned in the big drain alongside the road, with Mr. Price underneath it unconscious. Mr. Price, who suffered abrasions to the face and head, was removed to the Waikato Hospital, and has since recovered. On account of his being incapacitated, a case arising out of the recent collision between his lorry and a car on the same road was postponed from Wednesday’s sitting of the Court until the January Court day. —Matamata Record.
