TE WHETU.

ANNUAL SCHOOL PICNIC. The above event is looked forward to by young and old as the most important in the yearly happenings in this district, and this year it eventuated under fine conditions, and again proved a large success, there being a large attendance of children and adults, the latter watching the various running and other events with keen interest. The whole of the attendance were provided with afternoon tea, and also again to tea at the conclusion of the sports, and the, success of the picnic was in a very great measure due to the efiorts c-f a ladies’ committee, under whose charge the connr.issiariat department came in for much eulogy. Several close finishes were witnessed in the children’s runningevents, and keen interest was taken in the open events, the handicappers in the latter securing close finishes. Ten starters. Generous donations of trophies made by Te Whetu and Putaruru business firms, caused keen competition in several of the open events, and these, together with school prizes, were presented at the conclusion of the day’s sport by Mr. H. Jensen to the various winners. Toys were also distributed to, all the little ones, and the two “ Lollie Men ” were again subjected to rough treatment, by a healthy lot of youngsters. All officials combined to make a good day’s sport, and the picnic was considered one of the best yet held.
