TIRAU.
DAIRYING. I : So far as production is concerned the dairying season has commenced auspiciously at Tirau. During the past few years much new country has c been brought in and this has meant s increase in the size of the herds. In | £ addition there are several new herds, f 1 One of the best of the latter is Rose ! and Rutledge’s farm on the main I ( Putaruru-Tirau road, where Mr. Her- !■ 1 vyn Deed is milking 74 high grade ; 1 Jersey heifers. Most of these are ' 1 from heavy butter-fat producing 1 dams of Taranaki. ‘ Another farmer to commence dairy- ! ing is Mr. W. H. Allen, jnr., who is 1 milking 70 cn his farm (part of the j 1 old Campbell estate). Of the herd 1 30 are cows and the balance heifers, 1 also from Taranaki. 1 The dairyman with the largest 1 herd in the district is Mr. A. Gray, 1 who has 130 milking in the one shed. Most of these are grade Jerseys, j * many being from Taranaki. The * herd is managed by Mr. G. Whyte, i 1 The two herds with the highest 1 averages last year, Mr. John Wat- ! son’s (3281 b) and Mr. L. Bishop’s 1 (3181 b) are both doing well and should at least come up to last year’s ' average. | s GENERAL. 1 1 Mr. R. Jones, who has been post- i master at Tirau for the past 15 i months, has received notice of his i transfer to Manurewa. Mr. Jones 1 was a regular playing member of the i Tirau Tennis Club. . The Tirau Tennis Club opened its ! t season officially on Saturday. • ~ve- i ra 1 new "members Were among c present, and all spent an enjoy;.' \e * day. Afternoon tea was supplied y ? the lady members. £ Mr. E. Smith, formerly of the Te f Teko Hotel, has taken over the Oko- e roire Springs Hotel and estate, from 1 Mr. J. Callaghan, who has been man- f aging during the last few months. c There has been a noticeable increase i in the popularity of the hot springs t for some time, and with the increase t of the motor traffic it should grow t greater. This also refers to Tirau,: c which is on the main Auckland- \ [ Cambridge-Rotorua road. j \ The Tirau Bowling Club’s green J i will be ready for play after a few | i days’ dry weather, but it is not pro- ] t posed to hold the official opening un- 1 £ til late in November, when invitations ! t will be issued to adjacent clubs. Last, ] year’s opening was one of the most 1 < successful of the season. j j
