WAYS WITH HANDKERCHIEFS.
Gay printed silk handkerchiefs in various colours and patterns make charming lamp-shades, table-runners, and chair backs; while' a couple of big ‘ ‘ workman ’s’ ’ handkerchiefs will fashion a fascinating cover for a nursery or garden cushion. A fine white lawn handkerchief, printed or embroidered with wee coloured flowers, could be let into each of the four corners of a plain white tea-cloth; the work would not take long to do, and would turn a plain cloth into a very dainty tea table covering. Tiny tea-napkins might be fashioned from lawn stencilled or embroidered to match, and an uncommon and charming set would be the result. A pair of plain casemeht curtains could be beautified by the addition of borders made of bright handkerchiefs printed in a bold “batik” design', and muslin or cambric hangings might be trimmed with squares of sprig-em-broidered lawn let into the hems. Imagine' the charm of a pair of old-fash-ioned spotunuslin curtains, adorned with a border of handkerchiefs patterned in rose-pink, forget-me-not-blue and apple green.. A scheme like this is particularly suitable for an “oldworld ” type of sitting room, or for a little girl's bc'droom. Patterned cotton handkies. in .bright* clear colours, are delightful for trimming knockabout clothes for little people. A play-frock of butcher-blue -linen would be lifted right out of the ordinary if it were adorned with quaint scarf collar and pockets of white spotted red material. One mo-derate-sized handkerchief will be sufficient; it should be cut in half diagonally, and one portion used for the knotted collar. The. other ha f must be halved-agqin ,d.iagmiaily, to give two lit Mo triangular pockets-—and everyone knows that pockets are indispensable when one is seven-and-a-bit!
