MATAMATA COUNTY WORKS.

THE ENGINEER’S REPORT. Reporting to the Matamata County Council at the monthly meeting held at Tirau on Wednesday, the county engineer, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald, reviewed the work of the past month as follows: The Kaimai Hill: During the fine weather the lower portion of Kaimai Hill (No. 20 Main Highway) was ploughed and graded and the work was not quite completed before the weather broke. Several slips have been cleared and numerous culverts repaired and set down deeper. , Putaruru Pumice Rock: The sur- I faceman south of Putaruru have spent most of the past month getting out pumice and rock. Main Highways: The Wehr grader has been out on Main Highways and at Overdale. Fordson outfit banking up metal on Main Highway in Matainata area. Horse team similar work on Main Highway near Hinuera. trucks spent the month sanding surfaces on various roads. Road rollers have been stationed in the north of the county on the several me- - tailing works in hand. The metalling south of Matamata on the west of the railway line is completed. Metalling of the Main Highway south of Matamata will be completed in a few days’ time. Metalling of Main Highway north of Matamata has reached Waharoa and the gang is at work in Waharoa main street. Hinuera and Horahora: Gardner, who had finished metal carting near Matamata, then completed his sanding contract in Hinuera Valley. Strong has completed the corner on Maungatautari main road near Horahora school. Btetal will be laid on several new surfaces in this locality I when the weather takes up. Various Bridges: Okauia bridge has. decking laid and wing walls will be finished off as soon as the present fresh in the stream subsides. Plans for Waihou bridges, Waimou main road and Hinuera-Te Poi main road are well forward, and it will probably be possible to call tenders during November. The deviation of a stream is resulting in serious scouring of the approaches and foundations of a small bridge on Watson’s road, Okoroire. Companies’ Cartage: Negotiations with Perpetual Forsts, Ltd., re repairs to roads south of Putaruru are .progressing amicably and it is hoped to finalise them shortly. The position was reported in detail to the finance .and works committee. Negotiations with Mr. Kelly, sawmiller, of Waharoa, were reported in detail to the committee, who are reporting to the council on the subject. The report, was adopted.
