Emery marked in his 25 and the green .forwards rushed play to the home line, where a knock on spoilt a great chance.

From the change round and against the wind the red forwards broke away and Butt picking up at halfway made a fine solo effort, being pushed out past the 25 flag. Hearn led a forward rush, but Meta marked in time and Robinson returned his kick to half-way. Good forward play followed by Brown, Butt, Hearn and Cairns, the two latter taking play to the visitors’ 25, where a green forward rush gave relief. Forests secured in a line out, but McDonald gathered up and made a fine dash with Thorpe and Henderson in support, the latter being held up on the line. Henderson fielded the dropout, and kicked to Cox, who made a fine run upfield, Taylor grassing his man on the quarter line. The red forwards broke away from the line out, Watkins relieving with a nice mark, which however gained little ground. Putaruru 14, Forests 0. The last quarter commenced with Butt and Conrad dribbling through the green forwards, Conrad going off injured and Robertson taking his place. Robinson started a passing rush from a scrum, Kusabs, McDonald, Thorpe and Henderson going to the greens 25, where Hendersons inpass went astray, the green forwards coming back to the home 25, where Cairns rel'eved. From a line out Robinson to Kusabs to Thorpe, who centred, but Yendell was offside and a chance was lost. From a scrum m midfield Watkins got his backs moving and Cox finally. secured to make a fine run through to Mears, the borne full bringing off a great tackle. The red forwards rushed play to the visi ors’ 25, and from a scrum Robinson let Kusabs, McDonald and Robertson

away, the latter racing over in nice position. Henderson failed with the kick. Putaruru 17, Forests 0. Time ( went shortly after with the reds again t pressing. I ( NOTES. Considering the fact that the Puta- I ruru representative team included six 1 emergencies they are to be congratu- < , lated on their substantial win by 17 t i points. The game was notable - : chiefly for the missed opportunities oi i the Forest backs to score when in ■ ( favourable position through erratic i passing and not running straight. The ] visiting backs were for three-quarters i of the game superior to the local 1 backs and the score hardly represents the run of the game. By' passing : tactics the greens consistently' opened up the game, but the Putaruru forwards were superior to their opponents in all departments, j The standard of play' was below that lof the previous encounter between ■these teams. The local backs showing little combination, although playing well individually'. In fairness to the local team, however, it must be pointed out that the withdrawal of , Green, Doherty, Kelly and Petherick from the back division through injuries upset the combination of the j department. j For the visitors, many' of whom j were not quite fit, probably owing to | the influenza epidemic, Dean was out- , standing. Neilson, Emery, Watkins, Cox and Anaru also shone out. For the home team McDonald, Robinson, Henderson, Mears and Taylor were outstanding in the back division, with : F. Hearn, Butt and Cairns the pick of ; the forwards. ; 1 [ PRESENTATION OF CUP. 1 At the conclusion of the game be- ! tween Putaruru and Perpetual For- : ests, Mr. J. W. Anderson, chairman of the Matamata County Council, t handed over the handsome cup, which

has been made available for charitable purposes by the Putaruru Union and the generosity of the business community. Mr. Anderson, in presenting the trophy to Mr. C. D. Brown, captain of the local team, congratulated the business community of Putaruru on their effort for charity and pointed out that the net proceeds would carry a subsidy of 24s in the £. All present would agree that the best team had won. The Putaruru forwards had played a great game and if the backs had been of a similar standard the team would take some beating. Mr. C. D. Brown replied in suitable terms and cheers were then given for both teams, and for Mr. Anderson. Amongst those present during the match were Messrs. H. Johnson, O. Jones and Brock, of the Perpetual Forests, and Professor Corbin, of Auckland University College. THU FINLAY CUP. PUTARURU V. MORRINSVILLE. Owing to injuries, there is some doubt as to whether several players will be fit in time for the Finlay Cup match. In view of this the following 19 players have been selected for the match, the final selection being left till'- the end of the week : Backs, Green, Mears, Petherick, Doherty, Kelly, Taylor, Henderson, McDonald and Robinson ; forwards, Butt, Cairns, Yendell, F. Hearn, Brown, Gasparich, Jensen, Tomalin, Robertson, Morrow. The following team has been chosen to represent Morrinsville : Full-back, S. Thomas ; three-quarters, K. Campbell, Robson, Cameron ; five-eighths, Anderson, Marshall ; half - back, Roach ; rover, Howard ; forwards, Bunting, Pretty, F. Thomas, Cameron, Goble, Russell, Hewitt. Emergencies, L. Letton, Marshall, Haycock, Haynes. REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL. WAIKATO 20, NORTH AUCKLAND 13. There was a good attendance at Rugby Park, Hamilton, on Saturday, when the Waikato and North Auckland teams met to try conclusions. The home team was as selected, but the visitors were without the services of Donaldson and White of the selected forwards. “ Bunny ” Finlayson had previously left the tourists for home. The game was most interesting for the first three spells, although the slight advantage throughout was with Waikato, who played the better football. There were flashes of real brilliancy from the visiting backs. Even in the last spell North Auckland had near the flag. Buckingham literally

chances to take the lead on two occasions, but knocks-on under the posts spoilt these. The game was open enough, but faulty passes spoilt many movements which might have been highly spectacular. The scores just about indicate the trend of the play. The teams were:— Waikato (black and white): Quin, Campbell, Kemp, Buckingham, Dare, Anderson, Mitchell, Howard, Courtney, F. Thomas, Montgomery, Carter (captain), Dan Bourke, Cameron, Chap man. North Auckland (blue): E. Wade, B. Simmonsen, D. Wilson, A. Findlay, B. Gould, C. Badeley, P. Seymour, Pengelly, Rika, F. Playward, J. Don i dson, J. Webber, A. Sowman, K. Watson, B. Fletcher. Waikato played against :.he sun and with the wind slightly igrinst :o m in the first spell. From the Queuing North Auckland got into the Waikato 25, but Waikato made headway through the forwards. The first opening movement was from the black and whites, the four inside backs. handling, to take play to half-way. Anderson then missed a pass which let North Auckland back to the attack. Watson was later called upon for a clever mark. Offside against Courtney spoilt a Waikato movement, and play went to half-way. There was little advantage in the play at this stage. Waikato were given a chance at goal with a free, which Dare put well outside the posts. Waikato then opened up beautifully from half-way. Quin received a punt and ran straight, drew his man, and passed. The ball was dropped, but was gathered by Howard, who passed to Kemp to Buckingham, who was unmarked. The kick failed. Waikato 3, North Auckland 0. The visitors immediately made tracks and play was on the Waikato 25 line. From a gallery kick by Buckingham, Findlay received and made a dash, which culminated in a free, with which Webber

made no mistake. Waikato 3, North ~nd 3.- The two scores had come within eleven minutes of the commencement. Soon after the kick Waikato again got over, hut were recalled for a throw forward on the opposite wing.. Campbell received well and got away, but was smartly brought down by Simmonsen. Waikato continued to press and Howard gathered and broke through the centre. The ball went loose, but Courtney got possession and got over. Dare converted. Waikato 8, North Auckland 3. A period of midfield play followed. The next score came from a mull by Findlay, which allowed Thomas to inpass to Burke, who got over. The kick failed. Waikato 11, North Auckland 3. Badeley was then prominent in some good opening work, but Wilson was caught. Quarter time was sounded. Howard mullef a kick early in the quarter, which le J the blues to his 25. Campbell then pm’: in a good saving

inn and kick, to relieve from a strong North Auckland attacking movement. The North Auckland forwards were kicking too hard at this stage, and losing the advantage of their bursts Howard broke through with the hall at toe. He footed it to Campbell, who knocked on in handy position. North Auckland broke through by Pengelly, who was unmarked from a line-out, but Quin saved. North Auckland’s next score came from a beautifully potted goal by Badeley. Waikato 11, North Auckland 7. From half-way Mitchell opened up to Anderson to Campbell, who missed the pass and 'hen knocked on. The North Auckland backs were now commencing to throw the ball about, Badeley be.mg particularly prominent. Mitchell was responsible for a good stop to pass to Buckingham, who sent into tno blue 25. The Waikato forwards were later responsible for a good handling movement, which was spoilt near the North Auckland line by a throw forward. A minute later Buckingham spoilt a Waikato back movement by throwing forward. North Auckland then went to attack through the forwards. Kemp got back in defence, but his Tr’ek was received by Gould, who should have passedbutdid not and got collared. He lost a good chance of a score. Waikato were now hard pressed and from a free for offside North Auckland scored their second penalty goal, and drew up to within a point of their opponents. Seymour was opening up well and it was the half who again sent North Auckland down, ktd Kemp forced. Dare was given a chance to set his backs in motion, but essayed to kick. North Auckland received the kick and went down through the forwards. Kemp again bad to force. The half closed with the scores unaltered. Waikato 11, North Auckland 10. The second half opened with some good forward work on both sides. Montgomery was twice prominent. Mitchell broke through the scrum and gave to Bourke to Carter, who threw forward when in a good attacking position. A moment later the whole of the Waikato backs participated in a passing movement, which was finished off by Buckingham getting over

dived over the fullb nek to get the score. The kick failed. Waikato 14, North Auckland 10. Gould then marked well when hard pressed. Badeley ; was playing a Trojan’s game in de- ; fence and also in opening- up at this stage but the other insides were not , sound. North Auckland ag-ain got down j with a free kick and a hot rally en- i sued on the Waikato line. Kemp ulti- I mately cleared and North Auckland were penalised for playing- the ball off the ground. Findlay received the kick under difficulties, made a good recovery and beat three men to put the blues well on the attack. From a free for offside Webber kicked a good goal. Waikato 14, North Auckland 13. Thomas then opened up and Waikato went well down, but Simmonsen intercepted a pass by Anderson and took play right to the Waikato line. The defence held and the home forwards broke away, and at the other end Campbell collared Simmonsen to put Waikato in the blue 25. The game continued open and even. Anderson, Howard and Buckingham were then prominent, but the latter was pushed out, and Se"-man sent to half way from a free. On the other wing Simmonsen got over, but could not get down. Buckingham broke through but was not fast enough, and play again went to the home 25. The visiting . backs were showing up better than Waikato at this stage, while the forwards consistently had the better of the line outs. In the opening of the last quarter Dare spoilt a good opening by failing to pass and Kemp was called upon for another line piece of defensive work. Quin then got in a good line kick to put Waikato on the attack. Dare next missed with a kick at goal, Kemp spoilt a good opportunity by failing to give to Campbell when the latter was handy. A moment latei Campbell received and inpassed tc Mitchell, who burst his way to the line, but was penalised for lying or • 'lie ball. Mitchell doubtless thoughl l he was over. Campbell again ins passed nicely, hut the recipient wa; • collared. Waikato continued to at • tack, hut Anderson knocked-on a lov ! pass. Howard received from thi 5 scrum, and tried to break through bu t was held up and Waikato was thei

1 1 penalised. Findlay ultimately cleared i with a good kick. Kemp, Anderson ; and Buckingham was the next good t movement, but the last mentioned 1 dropped the ball, and a force was d given. It was taking North Auckland f all their time to keep the black and t whites out until Badeley sent into the y Waikato 25. Anderson and Buckings ham then indulged in a race to the e line at the other end, but the ball beat them to the dead ball line. Within a t. minute Courtney broke through and - passed to Anderson, who made tracks, s He was collared and dropped the ball near the line for Montgomery to pick e up and go over. Dare’s kick failed. ■ Waikato 17, North Auckland 13. On „. the Waikato 25 Gould "had a good opg. portunity but slipped with only Quin - to beat. A couple of throw forwards e under the posts spoilt possible scoring movements fdr North Auckland. Wai- . kato cleared to half way, with a free. q Quin was then lucky to stop a North. I Auckland forward. On the other side j Howard and Anderson took play to y the blue 25. Kemp to Campbell closed the scoring account of the day, h Campbell getting over near die corna er. The kick fell short. A good T game resulted: Waikati 20, North Auckland 13.
