COLLECTION OF RATES.

DISCOUNT NOT PROFITABLE Discontinued by Matamata. At the last meeting of the Matamata County Council the chairman (Mr. J. W. Anderson) remarked that he was against the continuance of the discount, which had bqen allowed for the prompt paymept .of rates. last year the discounts had involved the council in a loss of £246 10s. Cr. Allen: What did we get in overdraft ? Cr. Anderson replied that the £246 10s had been net loss. Many big firms and farmers always paid their rates as soon as the notices were sent out and to allow discount to these was simply making them a present of the

amount. The experiment of giving a discount had not had the desired effect, and had not compensated them for the cost involved. On the motion of Crs. Judd and Darby it was decided that no discount he given this year for prompt payment of rates.
