TOWN BOARD GRANTED.
THE PUTARURU PETITION. Early Election Expected. A letter has been received by the special committee set up by Putaruru ratepayers to further the town board scheme, from the Department of Internal Affairs, intimating' that it is intended to give effect to the ratepayers’ petition. This is the unanimous recommendation of the Commission which recently sat in Putaruru and took evidence on the question. The letter states that the Commission has considerably modified the area, but reference to the boundaries given below shows that it is practically the same as outlined by the local committee at the sitting of the Commission. The main alteration is on the Lichfield road, where an area 8« chains deep has been taken out of Mr. Dowd’s property. This ensures that this portion of the Lichfield road will come solely under the control of the new town board. So far no date has been fixed for giving effect to the recommendations of the Commission, but as the Matamata County Council is concerned in the matter the local committee will consult with this body next Friday. In regard to the costs of the Commission, these have been ordered to be paid by the petitioners and will be a charge on the new town board when it assumes office. COMMISSION’S REPORT.
In its report to the GovernorGeneral the Commission stated that the proposal to create the town board had the support of the Matamata County Council and the_ almostunanimous support of residents within the proposed area. By mutual consent the Putaruru Domain and Mr. Sayers’ property were excluded from the area, and also a large part of Mr. R. J. Wilson’s property. To this the Commission agreed, owing to lack of facilities for immediate use for residential purposes. In regard to Mr'.' Fitzherbert’s property, the report stated that after viewing this land the Commission was of the opinion that it should be included owing to the greater advantages which a continuous boundary would give. I Evidence given by the engineer to the Matamata County Council convinced the Commission that it was advisable to prevent overlapping on the Lichfield road, and accordingly a portion of Mr. Dowd’s property has been included in the area. THE TOWN BOUNDARY. The boundary as outlined and decided upon by the Commission now runs as follows: — Commencing at the Oraka stream, it follows the eastern boundary of Mr. Hudson’s property to the Taupo road, thence to the southern corner of the T.T.T. property, taking in a small part of Mr. Wilson’s farm ; thence in a straight line to the sojithernmost corner of Scott’s subdivision, and from this point the line follows Scott’s south-western boundary to the Lichfield road. From this point the line crosses the road at right angles to a depth of 8» chains in Mr. Mr. Dowd’s farm, and from here it runs parallel to the Lichfield road right to the Arapuni road. Crossing the Arapuni road at right angles, the line travels to a depth of 11 chains in Mr. Bent’s property, and from this point the line runs parallel to the back boundary of lot 3 till it strikes the eastern boundary of lot 2- Following up the eastern boundary of lot 2 produced, it touches the northwestern boundary of lot 5 and follows this line to the Overdale road. Crossing this road and the railway line at right angles, it runs directly through Mr. Alcorn’s block to a point obtained by the junctions of the boundaries of sections 181 and 180, and the back boundaries to Arapuni street sections, produced. Thence it travels by way of the back boundary line to the Oraka stream and follows the stream back to the starting point. THE ELECTION. Some few weeks back a letter was received in Putaruru from the Valuation Department guaranteeing that the valuation roll of the new area, would be completed in time for the election of the new town hoard which automatically follows the proclamation of the area. So far as is known this roll is not yet completed, and until it comes to hand a ratepayers’ roll cannot be compiled. As soon hS this information comes to hand the first election of Putaruru commissioners will be held. Steps already been taken by the local mittee to expedite matters and- it is expected that the date of the election will be known during the course 6f the next few weeks.
