LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Reporting at the Thames Valley Electric Power Board meeting on Tuesday upon the erection of synchronous condensers, the engineer (Mr. N. G. McLeod) said that the condenser plant at Morrinsville was made alive on the 23rd July and was given a trial ran on the 24th. Since the 28th it had been running continuously and the indications were that the results would be quite satisfae-toi-y. The erection of the plant at Matamata would be started this week. The foundations for the condenser set at Turua were now being laid. “ There in a minute ” stated a local greengrocer this week on hearing a step in the front shop. The movement continued, and, thinking the “ customer ” was having a good look round, no particular heed was paid. On entering the shop a minute or' so later the owner was amazed to see a black and white cow contentedly devouring a case of extra special Sturmers. His haste to eject the marauder was so great that the animal nearly carried away the door jamb and a side window' when leavingwith a full-sized rosy apple in its jaws. Next day a further visit was paid, and this time, the apples being out of reach a box of healthy cabbage plants at the far end of the shop was the objective. Half the quantity was devoured before a further ejection could be made, as this time gentler means were employed in view of further damage which might ensue. As the animal was evidently a household pet, and inclined to be friendly, it was some little time before the beast could be induced to leave. Anyone desiring to hear a picturesque description of owners of stray stock, or rangers in particular, has only to call on the shopkeeper in question and make reference to the above incidents. There was never another dog like Rin-tin-tin, and the picture featuring it is one of the outstanding of the year. In this story the dog performs in a manner that might well be envied by our most eminent human actors.*
