PUTARURU CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above chamber was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last Monday, when the following members were present : Messrs. J. W. Barr Brown (chairman), A. R. Vosper, J. W. Scott, A. Cosslett, C. C. Neal, J. H. Morris, T. F. Snell, A. C. Thompson, L. C. M. Wilson, J. Simpson, S. J. Parker, G. G. Griffiths and A. H. Dukeson (secretary). TIRAU CROSSING. The Minister of Railways wrote Stating that the request for the erection of a warning signal at the Tirau crossing on the Putaruru road would receive consideration. A further letter with reference to the construction of a loop line at Putaruru siding was also received. The chairman reported that the traffic manager had visited Putaruru since the last meeting and had stated , that he would recommend various suggestions to his department. POST OFFICE MATTERS. The secretary to the post office wrote in regard to various requests made by the chamber and stated that increased accommodation at the Putaruru post office and the institution of a letter delivery were being considered. TROUT HATCHERY. I The Minister of Marine wrote in reply to a letter from the chamber, stating that a Government hatchery •v. for trout had been established in the Tongariro stream running into Lake Taupo and good fighting fish were being bred. The establishment of hatcheries was in reality the function of the acclimatisation societies, and it was considered- inadvisable to have too many hatcheries.-—Received. CLIMATIC RESERVE. The Minister of Lands wrote stating that the Government could not see its way clear at the moment to provide the funds necessary for the conservation of the summit of Maungatautari range.—Received. PUTARURU STATION. The Minister of Railways wrote stating that it was not considered an opportune time for the erection of a subway or overhead bridge at the Putaruru station but that the stationmaster had been instructed to keep a passageway clear at the rear of the station for passenger traffic. Members considered the reply very unsatisfactory as the only entrance provided for passengers was through a cart entrance, which at the moment was in a very boggy state. It was decided to reply in these terms and to seek Mr. Hockly’s aid in the matter. CLOSING OF MAILS. Mr. A. C. Thompson reported that the Putaruru postmaster had advised that it was utterly impossible to extend the closing time of the Auckland mail in the evening as the biggest mail of the day arrived at that dime. TELEPHONE SERVICE. Mr. Brown further reported that he had been advised that service should be obtained on local telephones in four to five seconds. Further inquiry had revealed that it was not always the service but the system which was at fault. STATION ENTRANCE. On the motion of Messrs. J. W. Barr Brown and A. R. Vosper it was decided to draw the attention of the Matamata County Council to the entrance to the station opposite Mr. A. E. Barr Brown’s shop. NEW MEMBER. Mr. J. C. Tomalin was elected as a member of the chamber.
