FOREIGN BUTTER BOXES.

In making a recommendation to the New Zealand Dairy Produce Export Control Board to discontinue the use of Swedish butter boxes, the Board’s London agency points out that, in order to maintain the reputation and; quality of our butter, it is essentially necessary that the containers should not in any way contaminate the butter. From the experience we have had, and also from the comments of Mr Walter Wright and Mr Ross, the Government graders,” states the report, which is published in the,New Zealand Dairy Produce Exporter, “we think lhe industry would be well advised ;° discontinue the us e of Swedish but-ter-boxes. We must remember that ve are faced with keen competition ’" om Australia and Canada, and it is inly by upholding the reputation of >ur butter that we can expect to continue to hold the premier position for the manufacture of butter. Our competitors are using every •nethod in the form of grading, packng, etc,, |o put their commodities on he market in the most attractive manner, and if we do anything that is gong to impair the quality of our proluct we will be at a disadvantage, and may very easily lose what has taken is years to achieve. Especially in the face of the Board’s policy of allocating allotments, and spreading our shipments over a longer period, it is essential that our butter containers | should not in any way contaminate the ] butter.”
