TOKOROA.

INDIGNATION MEETING. At a meeting of Tokoroa settlers on Saturday indignation was expressed at the manner in which the N.Z. Perpetual Forests Ltd. motor lorries were cutting up the roads. The meeting endorsed the action taken by the Matamata County Council in prohibiting the use of motor lorries except at such times when the use of chains is unnecessary. It was decided to communicate with the Minister of Public Works to the following effect: “ Afforestation lorry traffic blocked all our roads last spell wet weather. Most of this is quite unnecessary owing to railway facilities available, which would be more economical for company than lorry transport. Suggestion that action of County Council would throw men out of employment is humbug. By failing to act on suggestion of County Council company is making our position desperate.” IMPROVEMENTS TO HALL. .Last Wednesday’s dance, being the first social function held in the Tokoroa Hall since the building has been lined and the new ceiling erected, much appreciative comment was made by those present both on the neat appearance and the comfort of the improvements. SURPRISE PARTY. Another social event of the week was a gathering of young people at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, in the nature of a surprise party. ' A very pleasant evening was spent, the intruders being heartily welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. HALL TRUSTEES. On Saturday evening a special meeting of the hall trustees was held to pass the accounts and deal with other matters in connection with the extensive improvements to the hall. Mr. J. Price presided, and others present were Messrs. L. Newell (secretary), Sloper, Campbell, McHale, Voice and West. High appreciation of the manner in which the work had been carried out was expressed by those present, and on the motion of Messrs. McHale and Newell payment of all accounts was authorised. As £lO of the' £IOO available for improvements was still in hand it was decided to spend this amount on the erection of a porch at the side entrance. It was also decided to carry out improvements to the doors and windows and to purchase half a dozen trays for use in the supperroom. OPENING DANCE. A most enjoyable opening dance was held in the Tokoroa Hall on Wednesday, 23rd inst., by the local football club. It was very well attended and proved a huge success, visitors coming from quite a long distance. There were several novelty dances during the evening, the winners being as follow : Lucky spot, Miss T. Walsh and Mr. D. Voice first, Mrs. Barr and Mr. Watt second ; Monte Carlo waltz, Miss R. Rogers and Mr. T. Henderson first, Miss G. Butcher and Mr. M. McFetridge second. During the evening Mr. L. Hamilton, chairman of the local football club, on behalf of settlers, presented Mr. Clary Brown, of the F.A.C. staff, who is leaving the district, with a well-filled wallet of notes as a token of their esteem and goodwill towards him, and to serve as a reminder of Tokoroa friends. Mr. C. Brown suitably responded. Excellent music was supplied by “ Pearce’s Peerless Five,” while Messrs. Henderson and McFetridge were capable M.’s C. FOOTBALL SOCIAL. “ You can’t beat Tokoroa,” was indeed the slogan for last Saturday, when the Arapuni footballers were entertained at a social in the hall by the local club after having played that afternoon on the Tokoroa ground. Despite the fact that the dance was hurriedly arranged, all thoroughly enjoyed themselves, dancing and songs being indulged in till midnight, when the visitors, to show their gratitude, sang “ For They Are Jolly Good Fellows ” and depai’ted in the best of spirits. Music was supplied by Miss Sloper, and Mr. T. Henderson was M.C.
