NOCTURNAL PROWLERS.
BARBER’S SHOP ENTERED. Station Bookstall Visited. Sometime during Wednesday night a burglarious entry was made into the premises of Mr. C. D. Brown, Princes street, Putaruru, and the sum of £3 in silver taken from the till. A smoker’s companion and a razor were also taken, but though many othervaluable items of stock were within easy reach nothing else was removed. Wednesday being- a half-holiday no one was in the shop during the afternoon, but at night the recently-form-ed Young Men’s Club held their first meeting in the large room just behind Mr. Brown’s shop. The meeting did not close till a fairly late hour, and everything was intact at that time. When the shop was opened in the morning the till was found on the counter, having been emptied of all silver* and only a few coppers left. A window in the large room at the rear of the shop was found to be opened, marks on the sash showing that it had been forced by a chisel or some such instrument. On leaving the shop the burglars used the back door. ATTEMPT AT BOOKSTALL. On the following night an attempt was made by someone to force open the shutters on the railway bookstall, on the Putaruru station, owned by Mr. H. Haggard. The catches held, however, and the attempt was thus fnisrated. Both occurrences have been reported to the police, who are making investigations.
