STOCK SALES.
CLEARING SALES. Mr. Walter Hope’s. The clearance sale season started off well at Matamata on Thursday, when the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. conducted a dispersal of Mr. Walter Hope’s herd, consisting of pedigree, grade and Jersey-cross dairy cattle. Although rain and wind prevailed all day, there was a large attendance from all parts of the district, and good average prices were realised, considering that the cows would have to be kept for the winter and not be in profit till the spring. The three pedigree cows, all of good butterfat strains, brought 13gns, 19gns and 24gns respectively. Mr. J. Smilie was the purchaser in each case, and he thereby secured Kamo’s Totti, the daughter Karamel, and Richwood Snowbell, all three of excellent lineage. Four nice Jersey heifers were bought by Mr. Shepherd for £8 each. Messrs. H. Moore, J. Furness and L. J. Hastings were sorting out some choice stuff among the grades, nine of which averaged exactly £lO. Two Jersey hulls brought £6 and £9 respectively. The horses sold as follow : Bay gelding (eight years) £2O 10s, bay gelding (six years) £l6 15s, mare (16 years) £lB 10s. Tile hunter Goodwood was not sold. Among the implements a separator brought £ls ss, spring cart £l3 15s, Cambridge roller £ls ss, chain harrows £5 10s, tripod harrows £l3 10s, mower £2l 10s, drill £32 10s. Mr. Hope catered for the crowd really well. It was unfortunate that the day was so wintry, but nevertheless the sale was very satisfactory on the whole. MR. A. GIBSON’S. The first clearing sale of the season in the Morrinsville district was conducted by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. at Starky’s road on Tuesday, on behalf of Mr. A. Gibson. The market for the Jersey and Jersey-cross dairy cows and second calvers was good. Bidding was keen, and the animals were disposed of readily, the average for 38 being £8 15s 6d. The horses and implements did not meet with such a ready sale. The prices are:— Dairy cows: Best £9 10s to £l3 others £3 10s to £8 10s. Toung stock: Coming yearling heifers £2. Farm horses up to £l6. Farming implements: Discs £8 10s, tripod harrows £B, spring cart £l2, waggon £l6, cart saddle and breeching £6, separator £l3.

The Farmers’ Auctioneering Company reports under date May 22: Beef. —Plenty of prime ox and cow beef is offering both in the paddocks and yards, with no improvement in price, although the market is firm at late quotes, best ox making 30s to 31s per 1001 b and best cow 23s to 255. Fat Sheep.—Sufficient are coming forward 1 to meet the demand, wether mutton being about the same, with a slight rise in ewes. Store Sheep.—Although no rise in prices, there is a fair demand for store wethers and hoggets, but the market for ewes in lamb is quiet. Store Cattle.—The market is somewhat easier, due no doubt to the large yardings of outside cattle coming for-w-ard from Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast. These cattle in most cases are low in condition. A good inquiry exists for choice in-calf dairy heifers, also forward empty cows, but cull cows and weaners are dull of sale. Pigs.—The market is still firm for finished baaoners at about 6ld, with prices a little easier for unfinished and porkers. Good stores are -wanted but weaners are dull of sale.
