EVASION OF TRIM FARES.

CHILDREN IN SYDNEY. Offenders Dealt With. The Sydney tramway authorities rei eently issued a statement to the effect that last year 744 offenders were dealt ! with in the Children *s Court for evad- | ing payment of fares. During the three completed months of the current year 1 219 juveniles had been proceeded | against in connection with tramway irI regularities. Hoys up to the age of 18 were dealt with in the Children’s court, and the fact that the proceedings of that court were not published in the 1 newspapers was probably responsible / for the general ignorance of what cite ! tramway officials -were doing in this respect. In 'addition to the figures quoted, 187 adults were charged in the courts with various offences while, travelling on trams last year. An important aspect of the matter, and one frequently overlooked by the public, it was stated, was that an appreciable proportion of the children who evaded payment were not. potential paying passengers. The action of the department in apprhending them was not so much with the idea of recovering lost revenue as it was to discourage the youngsters from exposing themselves to serious risks by jumping on and off moving vehicles and riding in insecure positions.
