NOTES AND COMMENTS.

PURCHASE OF MANURES. Many and varied are the schemes for financing the farmer, but the soundest of ail such modes of ass'stance has not received a great deal of

attention, namely, that of the purchase of fertilisers for him, or tire direct loan of moneys for that express purpose. Some of those who have tried to analyse the causes of failure have come to the conclusion that, as often as not, the reason of failure is to be found in the fact that the farmer’s capital is drained off in meeting interest and principal on money borrowed, or on mortgage, and he being left with insufficient capital to buy manures and work the land. There is this much to be said for the fertilisers : if they are of thb right kind for the crop or pasture, and are applied at tire right times, it is almost a foregone conclusion that they will repay their cost several times over. For many struggling farmers, and for others as well, the most profitable form of expenditure in the long run is for manures. Unfortunately, many a man has had to try and get along without nearly sufficient fertiliser, and he has thereby been doomed to almost-inevltable disaster. Those who wish the farmer well might bend their energies to this end, with- far more satisfactory results than have been achieved in other directions during the past five years.
