DEFAULTERS’ LIST.

COUNTY ELECTION. Discussion at Hinuera. The following information was received from Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P., relative to the “ defaulters’ list,” and read at the annual meeting of the Hinuera Ratepayers’ Association:— u Re the defaulters’ list in county election and polls. This was the law from 1908 till 1915, when it was repealed. However, when the last Consolidation of the Counties’ Act was before Parliament in 1920. the clause was re-enacted. It is regarded as a j great spur to induce the laggards to j pay their rates, when an election or poll is coming on. | “ The clause now reads: ‘ The clerk i has to send to the returning officer a list of all persons whose rates, or any part thereof, are then unpaid or have remained unpaid for a period of not less than six and these per- ■ sons are not eligible to vote. 5 ” j The chairman (Mr. Phil Hawke) i thought the measure was unfair. The ; council had its remedy in the law courts, and as the ratepayer was legally obliged to pay the rates it was unfair that he should be deprived of his vote. The matter was held in abeyance for further discussion. Reference to this matter is made in a council advertisement.
